STEM lesson plan flubber

It has been so fun to travel to the Elem schools lately and make flubber. The students from grades Pre-K4 to 5th grade are learning about making hypotheses, asking scientific questions, and the 3 states of matter.

Some of the gifted students amazed me with their use of transparent, transluscent and opaque. We also learned the word polymer! The recipe for the Flubber- a fun polymer!

Step 1 and 2 can be done in advance and combined at any time for the final step.

Step 1- prepare borax solution

Dissolve 3 tablespoons of borax ( can be found in the laundry detergent aisle of any grocery store) in 1/3 cup of hot water

Set aside

Step 2: prepare glue solution

Add 1 cup glue and 1/2 cup water to a disposable cup or container.

Add food coloring, if desired

add glow in the dark gel, if desired

Step 3: Add the borax solution 1 teaspoon at a time while stirring to the glue solution until the polymer/ flubber is completely formed.

Enjoy!

Remember-

The flubber is safe to touch/ play with but DO NOT EAT!

If you get flubber on anything- it can be cleaned safely with vinegar

Flubber will last for 2-3 weeks if stored in an air-tight bag or container when not in use. It will last longer (possibly) if you store it in the container in the fridge!

If you don’t want to make your own mix- here is a link to some that you can buy off of Amazon
